Some of the smartest football bettors sit on the sidelines Week 1 of the NFL Season.
They watch the games, get a feel for how the free agent signings and rookies are panning out, the direction the teams are heading before starting to put some money down. Heck, they may even watch Week 2 as well.
No-one has ever accused me of being a smart bettor though. That’s why I’ve scouted the way too early Week 1 betting lines and have some bets in on a couple of road teams that look like good value.
I’m usually never a fan of traveling teams in the first week of the season but I’m not gonna let that stop me from making horrible decisions.
Here they are:
Detroit Lions (-2.5) at Arizona Cardinals
An overrated rookie quarterback, a first-time NFL head coach – also overrated, and a team that went 3-13 last year.
Who would bet on the Arizona Cardinals? Not me.
A couple of over-the-hill veterans won’t save this franchise from another horrible season.
A road favorite in Week 1 is only a stupid pick if it loses. And there’s no way the Detroit Lions can lose this one, right?
Pick: Lions -2.5
Houston Texans (+7) vs. New Orleans Saints
I don’t care that the Houston Texans pass defense was horrible last year. I don’t care that the Saints always have a scary good offense.
There’s no way a team that won 11 of its last 13 regular season games should be a 7-point underdog in Week 1.
I only see a 7-point spread because the betting public continues to cum their pants over the Saints every year.
What am I missing? The Texans still have JJ Watt and Jadaveon Clowney. Pretty sure DeAndre Hopkins is still a beast and DeShaun Watson isn’t coming back from a knee injury this year.
This can’t be because they lost Tyrann Mathieu can it?
I’ll be honest. I don’t know what’s going on here but it’s not gonna stop me.
Pick: Texans +7
