The Los Angeles Chargers may not have fans in the stands, but they’ve gotten plenty of support at the ticket window this summer.
Bettors are piling on the Chargers to win the AFC West (+190 odds) at online sportsbook MyBookie. At the same time, the AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs have been largely ignored by sports bettors after a record-setting 2018 season.
“The Chargers are drawing plenty of interest,” said Ryan Coleman, sportsbook manager at MyBookie. “We’ve taken 5-times more bets on the Chargers to win the AFC West than we have on the Chiefs.
“Our bettors believe there’s some value there and that the Chiefs could take a small step backwards.”
Taking a step back might be a reality for the Chiefs.
- They released running back Kareem Hunt late last season when it became public that he shoved and kicked a woman earlier in the year.
- Controversy surrounds star wide receiver Tyreek Hill with disturbing reports of domestic violence.
- Quarterback Patrick Mahomes could be hard-pressed to live up to expectations after a spectacular first season as a starter.
Going into 2019 with Super Bowl aspirations and the pressure to build on last year’s success could weigh down the Chiefs, especially if injuries hit.
And that leaves the door open for the Chargers to sneak out a nice payday if Philip Rivers can lead them to a division title or even to a Super Bowl. At MyBookie, the Chargers are currently +700 to win the AFC Championship.
“In the AFC, the Chargers are among the Top 3 picks in the offseason,” said Coleman. “People don’t seem to care about the season-ending blowout last year. They think this is a team on the rise and that it’s time for Philip Rivers to finally get to the big game.”
